May: Makeover Month!

The past few months (ok more like past 8 months) have been super hectic. So in order to satisfy all over you who have been asking for the next workshops, I have decided to put together a whole package. As I have recently moved my studio and my apartment, I am left with a beautiful, vacant, intimate space that I will use to your advantage in the month of May.

I propose three Saturdays, three kick ass classes + three different workshops!

1:30-2:30 Pilates mat challenge
2:30-4:30 Love Your Feet (workshop)

Saturday May 12, 2012:

2:30-4:30 Love Your Legs (workshop)

Saturday May 26, 2012:
1:30-2:30 Pilates mat challenge
2:30-4:30 Love Your Core (workshop)

One workshop is $55, or do all three for $150
One Pilates mat challenge is $20, or do all three for $50

Register for all three classes and workshops for $180!
***Insurance receipts available***

Location: 1025 Sherbrooke E (2 minutes from Sherbrooke metro)

I will post more detailed descriptions of each workshop in coming days, or if you have any specific questions please just write to me.

See you in Makeover Month!!!

Time to unwind… with a major challenge!

As I have just spent the past month applying four coats of paint in 7 rooms and moving my apartment and studio, my body is feeling rather twisted and out of sorts. I even managed to bruise my inner elbows carrying Pilates equipment (mostly wood and heavy metal springs) three blocks from the old studio to the new one… I can just imagine what my spine went through!

Major Pilates and Body Rolling sessions are now underway to undo the damages, and to add an extra perk I have signed up for a 30-day hot yoga challenge that starts April 15th. A lot of studios are offer similar challenges all over the world, so you may want to look into your area to see if there’s one for you, and let me know how it goes!

I will not journal my daily experiences but hope to have an interesting photo montage when the challenge is over, demonstrating a difference (I hope) between my post-move scoliotic spine and my post-challenge spine. Not to mention my worn-out dancer’s knees and osteo-arthritic hip have been acting up, so it’s a nice chance for me to put all my modalities to the test!

Earn your chocolate for Valentines!

Ok so Valentine’s day is around the corner and I wanted to teach a Partner Pilates class. You can come with your better half to giggle and exercise before going for a romantic supper together, or come with your sister, neighbour, best friend or father for an equally fun workout. You can even come alone and we’ll match you up with someone. The point is, this class is not romantic or relationship based. It is all about using another body to stretch, strengthen and challenge your body. Plus it’s really fun! I’ve taught this class many times before for special events, Lululemon, etc, but will be adding some new goodies into the mix. Hope to see you there!

Top du jour

Following a recent fitting at Lululemon on St-Denis as part of the research and development team, here is my favourite top out of the dozens I tried. It is called the Power Dance Tank, and I it’s my fave for the following reasons:

- Ample room around the bust, perfect for women like myself who have broad backs and strong arms

- Very supportive built-in bra that does not cut into the ribs, allowing for comfortable and expansive thoracic breathing

- The body of the tank is so light and breatheable, you won’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all. So if you sweat a lot in your workout, you won’t feel sticky

- Drawstring around the base of the shirt, allowing for a more form fitting top so that your teacher/trainer can have a better look at your body and correct your alignment during training

- When the drawstring is released, the top has a beautiful flow to it that is clean and classy for teaching

Next Workshop: Love Your Stilettos!

Ok so you all know that I’m a foot fanatic, as much about wearing fun shoes as I am about keeping them strong, flexible and healthy!

So here it is, as promised, a workshop on how to properly wear high heel shoes and make your feet strong enough for the task. You will also learn how to take care of your feet before and after wearing high heels to limit the damage these can cause.

Learn to improve/prevent:

Bunions
Neuromas
Tight calves
Stiff lower back

So come with friends and learn how to strut your stuff with grace!

Saturday June 4, 2011, 4:30 to 6:30 pm
Centre Kinesphère, 1565 Mont-Royal E (Coin Fabre) Montréal, QC
55$ – receipts available

The Men in Pilates

The Pilates memorial conference in Monchengladbach, Germany, held a series of workshops focused specifically on the male client. It was great to see many male Pilates teachers from all over the world sharing their knowledge and love of this technique which has unfortunately been more on the women’s side of fitness. It cannot be said enough, PILATES IS AS MUCH FOR MEN AS IT IS FOR WOMEN!!! In the video below my friend Luis Bravo takes a male client through a series that demonstrates strength, control and flexibility.

Lolita on Joseph

A letter from my teacher, Lolita San Miguel, regarding this International Conference and Memorial Plaque Honouring Joseph H. Pilates:

Joseph Pilates 1880-1967

A man, born in Monchengladbach, Germany on December 9, 1880, after an immensely productive life filled with many inventions, a life dedicated to finding ways of making the human body function better, died in New York City on October 9, 1967, penniless, and without having received the recognition due him.

That man’s name was Joseph Hubertus Pilates. I was his student.

In 2009 I visited the city of his birth and discovered that except for a handful of people, no one in Monchengladbach knew who Joseph Pilates was. Right then and there I made it my mission that this would change. I am happy to tell you that we have been given the opportunity to place a Memorial Plaque where now stands an empty space with a linden tree, the exact location where once stood the house where he was born.

The Plaque will honor Joseph Pilates, the genius who has revolutionized and influenced the entire world through his Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.

Our intention is to unveil this Plaque on May 7, 2011, Pilates Day.

Surrounding the celebration we will also have a Conference of Pilates Teachers from Friday May 6 to Sunday May 8 featuring internationally known presenters covering Mat, Reformer, Chair, Cadillac, Arcs and Barrels and workshops on Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis, Scoliosis, the Pelvic Floor, Lypodistrophy, MS, racquet and other sports, and other topics. The Conference will be held at the beautiful Haus Der Erholung in Monchengladbach.

YBR Foundations and Experiential Anatomy

May 27-28-29, 2011, 18 hours
Centre Kinesphère, 1565 Mont-Royal E (corner Fabre) Montreal, Quebec

Anyone who has had some experience with YBR®, wishes to go deeper into their own self-evaluation and possibly become a certified practitioner is welcome to enroll in Phase 1.

Experiential anatomy lessons are the core of the YBR® curricula. This provides students with the foundation needed to develop confident therapeutic skills.

We start you at the beginning feeling your own muscles from origin to insertion. Knowing how to find and feel your own muscles are crucial to problem solving and helping others to heal themselves.

Teaching skills are gradually integrated with ongoing study and practice of YBR®routines so that students get YBR® into their own bodies and they empower their own students and clients to become fixers of their own bodies.
